China installs turbine generators on ships to power lasers and rail guns

According to Chinese state media, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy is equipping its ships with powerful 20-megawatt generators that will provide the necessary energy to combat lasers and rail guns.

Their developer, the 704th Scientific Research Institute of the Chinese State Shipbuilding Corporation, did not disclose which ships in question, however, most likely, these are type 055 missile destroyers.

In recent years, Chinese scientists have made significant strides in the development of integrated electric propulsion systems (IEPs), which are capable of providing power to naval ships and have several advantages over internal combustion engines or hybrid engines.

With three or four new turbine generators, the Type 055 destroyer will be able to reach speeds of over 30 knots (55.5 km / h) and provide power for combat lasers or railguns. The turbine generator can also be used on aircraft carriers under construction as a power source for an electromagnetic catapult.
