Norway launches the world's first autonomous shipping company

In May last year, it became known that by 2020 the Norwegian vessel Yara Birkeland, as a result of modernization, could become a fully autonomous container ship with electric traction. It will be part of the newly created Massterly, the world's first autonomous shipping company.

Yara Birkeland was created jointly by the Norwegian chemical company Yara, the Kongsberg marine technology company and the Wilhelmsen shipyard.

In accordance with the agreement, Massterly will be engaged in the design and construction of ships, as well as the creation of management systems and logistics. The company's control centers will be used for monitoring (including remote) vessels, both in Norwegian territorial and international waters.

Massterely will be based in Lisaker, Norway and will start operations this August.
